Do you know how difficult it is to not be able to announce something awesome because you're waiting for several things to fall in line first - especially when that something is in reference to the VERY thing you're trying to accomplish?
Well we've been keeping this under wraps for a couple of months now and we are so pleased to finally announce that our very first body armor grant has been issued to the Newburg, Wisconsin Police Department for one vest!
Our goal for our initial grant was to find an agency that needed multiple vests (BIG announcement coming soon!), but Newburg's application stood out to me because they were trying to replace one vest for an officer who had been wearing body armor made in 1990!
If you're unfamiliar, body armor "expires" every 5 years and the manufacturers will not stand behind any vest worn past its 5 year mark. This is because the fibers that make up the panels break down over time due to wear, sweat, and other contributors.
Could a 26 year old vest stop a bullet? Probably. Maybe.
Should any officer be wearing a vest manufactured in 1990 in 2016? Absolutely not!
So I jumped at the opportunity to provide Newburg with a grant under ONE condition: They had to ship me that 26 year old vest once the replacement arrived!
I wanted that vest for a couple of reasons:
- It's going to serve as a mascot of sorts, reminding us of why we do what we do and that the need for it is very real.
- I wanted to make sure that it was never issued to another officer ever again!
"The" vest (pictured) arrived Friday along with the letter pictured above and I couldn't think of a better start to the Labor Day weekend!
Labor Day, according to the Dept. of Labor, "constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country". Hundreds of thousands of law enforcement officers contribute to the well-being of this country of ours everyday - some giving their all - and I am honored to know that at least a few of them are now getting the protection that they deserve via the work we are doing here at the American Armor Foundation!
We currently have grant requests equaling over $15,000 in needed funding and we only have the means to provide a fraction of them at this time. PLEASE consider a one-time donation in any amount or become a "Monthly Hero" and make a huge difference for as little as $3.00 per month!
